Introduction
Every now and again I give my regular expenses a good going over, why? Because I am always looking for ways of reducing my regular monthly expenses. It frees up money to put towards my Debt, Savings, Premium Bonds or Sinking Fund.
I must admit the better I get at this task, the smaller the saving. Why? Because I have been doing this for a while and I made the mega savings nearer the beginning of my debt-free journey.
I know that this blog post is about Insurance specifically but there’s is just one thing I have to say to you and that is “If you don’t ask, you won’t get.”
Have you ever asked a service provider to reduce your monthly bill by 35%? I have and it worked. I can’t say it has happened again, but it happened and it helped me massively.
Anyway, back to the Insurance talk, we all know how important insurance can be and yet if you are like me then every month you moan about having to pay it.
Living in London is not cheap and getting insurance quotes always has me thinking ‘How much would it be if I lived in a quiet small town?’ To be fair the thought fades away as quickly as it came but the prices remain. Insurance cover is a must-have for cars & buildings and a sensible option for all others.
My Insurance Experiences, Renewals & Quotes.
Home (Contents) Insurance
I have only had Home Contents Insurance for the last three years, I justified this because there is always someone home but then I had a dream (nightmare) and assumed it was a sign and so got my Home Contents Insurance cover first thing the next morning.
With London postcode and a large house, I was expecting the worst, but it was… okay, I say okay because it is slightly annoying paying to protect your property from theft, however, I guess the replacement of loss & accidental damage cover cancels out that argument.
Before you look at the monthly payment amounts over the three years, note that I forgot that it was renewal time. To be honest, I got a bit side-tracked what with COVID so, I didn’t do my research or comparisons, but I did just notice an almost 50% increase on my bank statement. Trust me, if I had been on the ball I would not be paying this amount.

When calculating the value of the contents for your application, don’t forget to include decorating costs, all types of flooring, curtains, lighting etc.
Car Insurance
Car Insurance is something that we rarely forget about and usually shop around for, when I first started driving my monthly payment was £138 per month and was a burden, thankfully it has gone down a lot but not enough for my liking.
As you probably know many factors determine your Car Insurance quote – Driving offences, points, accidents, claims, duration of driving, no claims, number of dependents (18 and under), postcode and vehicle value amongst other things.
For me personally, my postcode goes against me heavily, but I have no Driving offences, points, accidents, claims and I no longer have any dependents with an additional year no claims, so this new quote was slightly lower. It is worth remembering that a £6 a month reduction is £72 based on 12 months / £60 per year based on 10 months.

To reduce your car insurance consider adding or joining a partners existing policy but only if they have no point, driving offences etc.
