How To Stop Spiders From Moving Into Your House.
I like to think I’m a reasonably brave person but when it comes to spiders I am trembling in fact the closer the creature is to me the closer I am to being described as hysterical.
I just need to know how to stop spiders from moving into your home.
I’m serious, I’ve felt close to passing out at the sight of a big one. Spider I mean 😂.
Last night was no different and the sight of 3 (yes three) hairy thick body spiders in my doorway was just too much.
I’ll be honest, for a quick second I contemplated going back to the pub and not returning home until I was drunk enough to not be bothered but I didn’t think I could afford all of that alcohol I’d need to get to that level.
In the end the urge to go to the loo accompanied with the embarrassment of a Uber driver watching me cry I decided I had to just do it. So I did it.
This morning I woke up with no hangover but slightly panicking over Spider-Gate, I stopped myself from google types of spiders new to the U.K. and decided I had to stop these eight legged creatures from trying to enter the house, my bed, ears or mouth 🤣.
Within an hour I was on my way to B&Q for Lemon plants and mint plants because apparently spiders hate them.
Maybe everyone else had the same idea because the lemon plants were all gone but they had a banging deal on their gorgeous mint plants.

Things Spiders Dislike
So we already know about Lemon and Mint plants but there are other things that they cannot stand. Lime, Vinegar, Grapefruit, Peppermint, Lavender, Rosemary and Conkers.
Now I mention conkers but I have tried this over the last couple of years and they didn’t work for me.
They did look good on the windowsills but nope they did not work.
From the list, it seems they don’t like strong acidic smells – so you know what to do.
Spider Repellent Suggestions.
Help to prevent spiders in the house
There are other things that can be done to reduce the chances of these unwanted visitors in our homes.
- Hoover regularly
- Close windows by dusk.
- Use lemon/mint scented cleaning products
- Remove old cobwebs
- Keep a clutter free living space

I’ve had some seriously nightmarish situations with spiders when I lived in the UK, and they make me nervous even now, haha! The biggest spiders in Britain seemed to always find their way into my room or home. Funnily enough, when I moved to Ohio, USA I haven’t seen anything like them. We get other insects and bugs but no spiders (or at least nothing like the ones back home). These are great tips, I will give them a go when I finally move back to Britain.

I am terrified of spiders, I am really bad. I have noticed that since I invested in citrus and mint scents I have only seen a couple.

YES! I have noticed a few spiders in the house recently I am guessing it is because the weather is getting colder. Spiders don’t tend to bother me too much but my partner is terrified so these are some great tips!

I will have to try that again. Thanks for the tip.

I know, I don’t understand why there are so many this year. I feel like putting a ring of every citrus-scented plant and product around my house. lol

Oh gosh, these spiders are huge this year, aren’t they? Hopefully, I have done enough to keep them away, the house smells of lemon and mint and I love it. It’s super handy as well, I used some of the mint leaves for my Mojito on the weekend lol

Glad it works, there seem to be so many more spiders than usual.

Omg I soooo needed this post! I had a massive spider in my room last night and it took 40 minutes to find it and a mild panic attack. Definitely investing in some of these, probably lemon sorbet wax melts and some lavender as I also live the scents. It’s amazing how much you can use for spiders!

Great post. We have a spider problem where we live. I use essential oils in a spray bottle & currently have every citrus cleaner & air fresher I can purchase. Seems to help x

I’ll admit I’m very similar with having strong reactions to spiders and most bugs in my space. I regularly go around with microfiber cloths getting rid of spider webs and using lemon essential oil with my cleaner and have noticed big differences – I’ll make note of your other suggestions as well. Thanks for sharing.

Perfect timing! This last week I feel like I’ve gained at least 5 rent free lodgers. And their cousins are waiting in the wings each time I open the back door 🙁

I definitely needed to read this post as I absolutely hate spiders! Thanks so much for sharing!

I love that your list of suggestions include using lemon and mint scents, houseplants that repel spiders, and keeping home clean and tidy! I do not like to use chemical repellents so natural solutions are always a win for me!
Thanks for sharing. 🙂

I tend to keep them right next to the windows or on my desk/corners of rooms. A good little collection like 5 or 6 in one place 🙂

You are welcome.

I don’t blame you, i was screaming the other night I am surprised the neighbours did not call the police. I may have to buy Mint spray for my car and handbag. Thanks for that. 🙂

lol, we need that support group. I have seen more spiders in and around my house in the last 4 to 5 days than I have seen in the last 5 years. They are bigger as well, I cannot understand what has happened. The house has a collection of mint and lemon scented products and plants so fingers crossed.

Conkers worked? I haven’t been lucky with them. Where do you keep them and how many? Maybe I was doing it wrong, I need all the protection I can get.
Basic with Life
No problem, I have to admit I hardly slept the night after spotting them in my doorway. lol

You are welcome, I wish I was not so scared of them.

Love this! I’m actually not scared of spiders but my sister is terrified so I’ll be sure to start using more mint and lemon cleaning products! Thanks for sharing.

Urgh, I hate the creatures and definitely need this post! Thanks 😀

Interesting post! I use conkers and they’ve always worked for me, but added prevention is key too hahax

I’m with you I hate them soooo much! The other day I was getting my daughter out of the car and I thought there was a twig trapped in the door handle, I pulled it out, looked down at my hand and there was a huge huntsman spider in my hand! I screamed the neighbourhood down and my husband came running out of the house thinking I was being murdered LOL. I can see the funny side now, but I went out and bought some peppermint oil as I heard they don’t like it. I’ll be giving the car a good clean again in the next few days, then sprinkling it all over every week. Watch this space! I’m going to look at some of your other options too. Thanks for sharing. We should start a support group LOL!

I have a mint spray which seems helpful. I saw a huge one in the bathroom at work the other day and yelped. They really scare me. Great blog!

Great post, I have no idea you could use all these to stop spiders from entering the house. The Lavender, tea tree oil is shocking. Thanks for sharing
